First of all, I'd like to say that it was a pleasure to meet all of the parents and family members who attended Aveson's first Celebration of Learning. It was amazing to see the wonderful interaction between my students and their guests. I am sorry I missed some of you during the second block on Friday. My daughter had her own student led conference during that time. If you would like an individual conference, I am available Tue-Fri from 4:00-4:40.

Bridge to Algebra

What's Happening This Week?

This week we are working on Multiplying and Dividing Fractions, and converting fractions into decimals, and decimals into percents. Students will be working on a class project with one partner where they will need to modify two recipes of their choice to feed 20-24 dinner guests. Students will also determine the cost of the dinner per person, and will chart out the cost of the dishes into percentage categories. For example:

Sugar Cookie recipe for 36 cookies (I need enough for 24 cookies )

Flour 2 3/4 cups
sugar 1 1/2 cups
butter 1 cup
eggs 1
vanilla extract 1 1/2 tsps
baking powder 1 3/4 tsps
salt 1/2 tsp

We need to multiply the recipe by 2/3 (36 x 2/3 = 24).

Then we will determine the cost of each ingredient needed to make the recipe, add them all up, and arrive at a total cost. We will be doing some virtual online shopping at the grocery store of the student's choice. Once we have completed this process for all of our dishes we will calculate the grand total for the meal and divide this amount by the total number of guests.

We will also be creating a chart that shows the percentage breakdown of the cost of each dish served at our dinner party. Student will receive a worksheet where they will be able to keep track of their recipes, conversions, and costs.

We will be working on this project during class over the next three days. Students will be allowed extra time to complete this assignment if they feel they need more time.

Additionally, starting Monday, Nov.26th, students will be assigned specific sections to complete on StudyIsland.com. These sections will be listed on this blog. More to come on this.

Algebra I

This week we will be working on California Content Standard:

3.0 Students solve equations and inequalities involving absolute values.

Because it is a short week, I will only see my Algebra I class 2 times this week. We will spend these two days practicing the above standard.

Additionally, starting Nov. 26th, students will be assigned specific sections in StudyIsland.com to complete. The assigned sections will be included in this blog.
