General Information:
Tutoring is available M-W from 4:00-4:40pm.
Studyisland sections for all cohorts are due tomorrow! Students will be given time tomorrow in class to work on their Studyisland sections.
What's Happening The Weeks of March 3rd-March 14th
Cohorts A, B & C
Next week we will start working on our Statistics standards. Students will be asked to research and choose 6 stocks to include in their Mock Stock Portfolios. Students will be required to monitor their stocks individually, and collectively as part of an "Investment Club". We will monitor each stock's activity for the next 4-5 weeks. We will use information collected from our stock portfolio to calculate mean, median, mode and range; to create graphs and charts showing stock trends; and to compete against other Investment Clubs within the class. The students are very excited about choosing their stocks!!!
CA Content Standards to be Addressed:
Grade 6
1.1 Compute the range, mean, median, and mode of data sets.
1.2 Understand how additional data added to data sets may affect these computations of measures of central tendency.
1.3 Understand how the inclusion or exclusion of outliers affects measures of central tendency.
1.4 Know why a specific measure of central tendency (mean, median) provides the most useful information in a given context.
Grade 7
1.1 Know various forms of display for data sets, including a stem-and-leaf plot or box-and-whisker plot; use the forms to display a single set of data or to compare two sets of data.
1.2 Represent two numerical variables on a scatter plot and informally describe how the data points are distributed and any apparent relationship that exists between the two variables (e.g., between time spent on homework and grade level).
1.3 Understand the meaning of, and be able to compute, the minimum, the lower quartile, the median, the upper quartile, and the maximum of a data set.
Cohort E & F
Next week we will complete our unit on systems of equations and inequalities, and start working on Polynomials. Over the next two weeks we will learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide polynomials.
CA Content Standards to be Adressed:
Algebra 1
9.0 Students solve a system of two linear equations in two variables algebraically and are able to interpret the answer graphically. Students are able to solve a system of two linear inequalities in two variables and to sketch the solution sets.
10.0 Students add, subtract, multiply, and divide monomials and polynomials. Students solve multistep problems, including word problems, by using these techniques.
Cohort C & D
Students are currently learning how to simplify and solve multi-step equations. Over the next two weeks will be discussing 1) the definition of slope, 2)how to derive slope given a line on a graph, 3) how to calculate slope given two points, and 4) how to identify slope in an equation.
CA Content Standards to be Addressed:
Algebra 1
4.0 Students simplify expressions before solving linear equations and inequalities in one variable, such as 3(2x-5) + 4(x-2) = 12.
5.0 Students solve multistep problems, including word problems, involving linear equations and linear inequalities in one variable and provide justification for each step.
